Now that same sex marriage is safe (for now), hear the amazing story of how a gay wedding was held at a sci-fi fan convention! This excerpt from JOURNEY THROUGH GAY SPACE shows just how powerful queer geek joy is as a practice of resistance to queer oppression. The film and my dissertation defense will take place on Star Wars Day 2026 (May the Fourth Be With You) at 7PM at The Theatre Company of Bryan-College Station.
Join me on my JOURNEY THROUGH GAY SPACE! I traveled the galaxy to hang out with these fabulous LGBTQ+ sci-fi fans. They shared their adventures in life and in sci-fi fandoms with me. These on-camera interviews were captured in Ohio, New York, Virginia, Florida, Maryland, and California. My research has taken me to corners of the universe I never knew existed and put me into conversations with a diversity of LGBTQ+ people. Coming May 4, 2026. Stay tuned…
Below is a video of me chatting about JOURNEY THROUGH GAY SPACE and what led me to study LGBTQ+ sci-fi audiences.

My dissertation project blasted off in 2024 and since then I have interviewed over 35 people. I have traveled to NYC, Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, California, Florida, and Ohio with two big bags full of film equipment. I am so humbled by the people that have joined my study and film project – I’ve met many amazing, kind, fun, and inspiring fans on this journey. I've also had help from friends who have held a mic for me, helped me move equipment, and helped me coordinate spaces to conduct interviews in.

12 fans have sat for on-camera interviews since March 2025. 6 experts and allies also sat for interviews.

I’ve interviewed fans at a variety of locations including at two different theaters in NYC, at an Airbnb in Philly, in their homes, places of work, and inside a sci-fi archive at City Tech (The City University of New York).
LGBTQ+ sci-fi fans tell their amazing stories of resilience, joy, and community. They reveal their reception practices, how they respond to media practices, and what it means to find belonging through community.
